Colac is built around the third largest volcanic plain in the world, which formed the area’s lakes and craters as well as its rich soil perfect for farming. About 10,000 people live here, and many more pass through on their way to see Southeast Victoria’s greatest attraction: the Twelve Apostles. These crumbling, weather-beaten giants stand tall and mighty as they rise from the ocean seven kilometres east of Port Campbell. Stand on the golden cliffs of the coastline and the views of the Apostles and other rock formations are spectacular. South of Colac, you’ll also find the Otway Ranges. These rainforests include the world’s tallest flowering plants: mighty mountain ash trees. And if that’s not the name of somebody’s band, it should be.

From your hotel in Colac you’ll be close to the bustling town centre based around Murray Street, with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants for you to try. Check out some notable old-fashioned buildings like ‘Derrinook’, a former hospital in Gellibrand Street with a LOT of chimneys. Nearby you’ll find Memorial Square, a WW1 memorial park filled with elm trees and ideal for a picnic. The Lions Club Market is held there on the third Sunday of every month, and it’s the place to go in Colac if you like your produce fresh.

Visit the biggest lake you’ll find in Victoria: Lake Colac, which is 1,820 hectares across the surface. Watch the black swans and ducks and take a walk around the pleasant shore areas like Meredith Park. Colac Botanic Gardens is on the shore of the legendary lake and has about 15 hectares full of more than 1,000 tree species. You can go for a walk amongst the trees, fields and roses or take advantage of the BBQ facilities and kiddy’s playground. And if you don’t mind driving for 90 minutes, the Great Otway National Park has everything from waterfalls and gullies to sandy beach and heathland.
