Fancy staying in a resort town with a slightly darker past than most?
From the safety of our Woodend accommodation, Victoria you can explore the ‘town at the end of the wood’ and learn a little of this regions notorious bushranger legacy. Woodend made a name for its self during the region gold rush of the 1850’s where it acted as a essential rest stop for prospectors as well as a safe haven from the region's infamous bushrangers. Today Woodend is charming resort town sporting craft shops, native plant nurseries and book shops, as well as a racecourse and golf course.
Accommodation in Woodend reflects the town’s gold rush past and offer visitors an attractive selection of grand hotels, county cottages and boutique guesthouses. With our selection of Woodend accommodation you can position yourself within the town and soak in some of Woodend’s relaxing ambience, or for a more intimate escape choose somewhere a little more rural.
As you wander through Woodend, past its streetscape of heritage buildings, veranda-fronted shops and impressive clock tower, you will note that the town has a very local feel to it. From the local produce on offer in the gourmet shops and restaurants, to the boutique beers served in the town’s hotel, not to mention the abundance of locally produced wine in the region, you are sure to find something to give your tastebuds a treat.
After enjoying a drop of wine in town why not go for a scenic drive and visit some of the 40 cool climate wineries of the region. If it’s a bit early for a drink then a visit to Hanging Rock is a must. Formed 6 million years ago and made famous through film and literature, Hanging Rock is the reputed hideout of bushrangers like ‘Mad Dog’ Morgan and is the perfect spot for a picnic. Located at the rock is the Hanging Rock interpretative centre. The centre offers visitors the chance to discover the history, mystery and geology of the rock and surrounding area. Enjoy a stroll or guided tour around the rock, or if visiting in summer, a night tour of the rock is also offered and adds even more mystery to this icon of Victorian history.
So whether you’re chasing bushrangers or a bottle of red, use our Woodend accommodation as your rest stop in Macedon Ranges.
